I haven’t been traveling lately, so I haven’t written one of my Hidden Gem articles in a while. Come to find out, there was one right around the corner. Well, close. Big Bad W was hiding right under my nose; I had driven by it at least 50 times since we moved here last year. My wife suggested we give it a try. Walking in you can view their many trophies and awards in BBQ competitions which is a different level from the BBQ chains. So you know that they have some skill.
Big Bad W has old fashion pit bbq, slow cooked and delicious. The meat is not overly seasoned to let the smoke do the talking. The brisket was tender and juicy, the pulled pork was on point, so tender and flavorful. Now, the chicken is always a big test; it was money because unlike so many places, it wasn’t dry. I had a good feeling about this place when they offered samples so you can pick what to order which shows they are proud of their product.
Now, the best bbq places have sides to match the bbq, and Big Bad W has great sides. The coleslaw was creamy and not overly dressed. My wife enjoyed the baked beans which were loaded with smoked meat, and the red beans and rice took me back to my time in the South. They also had collard greens which I will try next time. The other thing I need try is the banana pudding, but I’m 5 pounds heavier than normal because of the holidays.
Now, the restaurant is humble, no frills; they have 4-6 small tables, but don’t let that fool you; the food is great, the service is responsive, and it is very down home. Like visiting an old aunt or uncle on their annual BBQ. Big Bad will be in our going out rotation and so far is the best BBQ I have had in Stafford. I highly recommend you try it.
