This is a story of perseverance by a Greek immigrant in Nova Scotia, Canada. He wanted to open a gyros stand in Nova Scotia and found that nobody in that part of Canada liked what he was selling. First of all, they didn’t like the lamb, and they didn’t like the sauce, and they didn’t like the pita, so he made a lot of changes, and the result is the Donair Sandwich.
Now, I am keeping some aspects of my Uncle George’s Greek restaurant, so I am using already made beef and lamb. I am using the classic Donair sauce from Nova Scotia which is sweetened condensed milk with garlic. I also used gyro meat from Manhattan Pizza, onions, tomatoes, flat bread, and I insisted that there was feta. I hope you like it.
1 pound beef gyro meat
1/2 yellow onion diced
2 plum tomatoes diced
2 flat bread pockets
1/2 cup feta cheese
Sauce
12 ounces sweetened condensed milk
3 tablespoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons garlic powder
Mix condensed milk, vinegar, and garlic powder.
Open pocket of flat bread and add gyro meat, onions, and tomatoes; then top with sauce and feta.
