Mackinac Fudge

One of my favorite things on God’s earth is fudge, more precisely Mackinac fudge . This topic is relevant because I’m in Virginia Beach, and one of the companies from Mackinac has a store here. This is a great surprise and inspired me to write about the fudge that I grew up on.

First, my Michigan friends’ fudge was invented in Baltimore and brought to the island by the Murdock family. There are now 12 different fudge businesses on the island. The largests are Murdock, Ryba’s, Joann’s, Mackinac Original Fudge Co., and Kilwins which has spread to many locations. Many of these businesses ship in the USA, so you can always get your fudge fix.

On Mackinac Island you can taste every single one of them in a one mile walk. My family has done extensive research on these products, testing one after another, and my siblings all have different favorites. My wife and kids (who have done more research and have more advanced palates) have decided that Joann’s fudge is the best.

Whichever you choose the best part is watching the fudge makers apply their trade. From the stirring of the copper kettle to the magic on the marble paddling the air in the fudge to make it creamy I love to watch. The finishing touches of caramel or peanut butter are mouth watering. It is one of my favorite treats.
