This is not the common grilled ham and cheese sandwich. We start with rye bread – no white Wonder bread here. Now, on the inside, no, we are not going to use Oscar or Kraft. We will use prosciutto ham, Brie cheese, Granny Smith apple slices, and some spicy brown mustard. That will give us a sandwich which is salty, sour, melty, spicy, and most importantly, delicious. The other wrinkle is the use of real butter on the bread to make the outside crispy to contrast against the gooey inside. I hope you like it.
8 slices rye bread
Dijon mustard
8 slices Brie cheese
8 slices prosciutto
2 Granny Smith apples cut in thin slices
Heat skillet to medium.
Butter bread on one side and spread the other side with mustard.
Add Brie slices on top of the mustard side of bread.
Add prosciutto on top of the Brie.
Add slices of apple on top of prosciutto.
Add second slice of bread.
Add sandwich to skillet butter side down.
Cook until bottom bread is brown, about 4 minutes (you’ll know when the bread releases easily from pan). Turn over. Cook for an additional 4 minute or until brown.
Sorry – I was out of pickles.
