I have tried 8 or 10 time to make biscuits from scratch and I was never happy with the results. Mom and Dad used Bisquick for biscuits or opened a can. So I tried and finally got the science right then worked on the taste. They are great with sausage gravy, honey or just some butter. I found out that there are variables such as if it’s raining, how old your baking powder is, ect. Hope you like them.
2 cups all purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
3/4 cup milk add slowly to get the right consistency (if you have leftover just use to brush biscuits with)
1/3 cup cold shortening or butter (I like butter but southerners tell me I am wrong)
1 tablespoon of sugar or 1 teaspoon of honey)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper (optional) (but it’s better)(Red pepper is also a nice change if you are going to use biscuit for red eye gravy.
Mix flour, baking powder, seasonings mix well
Cut butter into small cubes or use a grater this works best
With forks or a biscuit-cutter into flour mixture until it becomes little
Mix to combine dough and gently and work dough into a ball.
place on a floured board
Flour hand so dough doesn’t stick
Using a floured rolling pin roll dough out five times and fold over into a 1″ thick circle
Cut biscuits into 3″ circle I use a juice glass coated with flour
Preheat oven to 450 Brush biscuits with melted butter
Have the biscuits touch this will give you a higher biscuit.
Bake for 8 – 11 minutes or until golden brown
