The great thing about making your own BBQ sauce is that you get to control what is in it. No ingredients with names you can’t pronounce, it can be adjusted to just your taste or to what you’re serving. It can have just the salt you are allowed or even go saltless. You can use honey instead of sugar. Here are the base sauce. You can make small batches if you can do the math.
KC sauce
This works on beef, pork and chicken and surprisingly on shrimp. This is a lower sodium version.
2 cups no salt ketchup (yes they make it)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup molasses
2 tablespoon honey
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
1 tablespoon cayenne (you may want to scale this back)
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon oregano
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons low sodium soy sauce
Add all ingredients to a two quart pan.
Cook on medium low for 25 minutes, but it gets better if you cook it for a hour. Add water if itt get too thick.
